Thomas J. McIlrath

Professor Emeritus
Institute for Physical Science and Technology

Research Interests: Professor Mcilrath's group studies the interaction of laser radiation with matter with special emphasis on very high intensities and on studies in the vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) and X-ray spectral regions. Current topics include very high resolution vacuum ultraviolet laser spectroscopy, laser cooling of atoms with pulsed radiation, nonlinear interactions of laser radiation with gases and the generation of sub-picosecond X-ray radiation in laser generated plasmas. The same group is developing tools to study laser cooled atomic hydrogen.  In separate experiments, Dr. Mcllrath is developing pulsed X-ray sources of sub-picosecond duration by creating solid density plasmas using short duration, high intensity lasers. .
