Professor Emeritus, Joint/Mathematics
Asymptotic Analysis, Special Functions, and Numerical Analysis

Frank W. J. Olver passed away on April 23, 2013, at the age of 88, he was a Professor Emeritus in the Institute for Physical Science and Technology and Department of Mathematics at the University of Maryland, College Park, Maryland.  His degrees of B.Sc., M.Sc., and D.Sc. were from the University of London.  In 1945-1961 he was a founding member of the Mathematics Division at the National Physical Laboratory in Teddington, U.K.  (Other members of this group included Leslie Fox, Alan Turing, and James Wilkinson.)  From 1961-1986 he was a Mathematician at the National Bureau of Standards (NBS) in Washington, D.C.  In 1969 he became a Research Professor at the University of Maryland. He has also been a Guest Worker at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST, the successor to NBS) from 1988 until his passing.  He was the Editor-in-Chief and Mathematics Editor of the NIST Handbook of Mathematical Functions, and also the NIST Digital Library of Mathematical Functions, both publish in 2010 after a ten year effort.

Olver's main areas of research were asymptotic analysis, special functions, and numerical analysis. His books include Asymptotics and Special Functions, originally published in 1974 by Academic Press and still in print in the A K Peters Classics series, and Selected Papers of F. W. J. Olver (two volumes, edited by R. Wong), World Scientific Publishing Co., 2000.    He was also author of one of the chapters of the highly successful 1964 NBS Handbook of Mathematical Functions.

Olver served as Managing Editor for the SIAM Journal on Mathematical Analysis, and was an Editor for SIAM Journal on Numerical Analysis, Mathematics of Computation, Methods and Applications of Analysis, and the NBS Journal of Research.  He was a member of the American Mathematical Society, the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, and the Mathematical Association of America, a Fellow and Chartered Member of the Institute of Mathematics and Its Applications, U.K., and a Foreign member of the Royal Society of Sciences, Uppsala, Sweden.
